Hazwoper Certification

The Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (Hazwoper) Certification is required for any worker whose job deals with hazardous materials. Find out more about the training, how to obtain your hazwoper certification, and why Satori Group is the right choice for hazwoper training in Alaska.

What is Hazwoper?

Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response, or hazwoper, refers to the standards put in place to protect workers and give them the training necessary to safely handle hazardous substances. In the event of the uncontrolled release of a hazardous substance, there is a huge health and safety risk to anyone involved. Hazwoper deals with managing this risk by putting a standard in place to ensure safe and effective handling of the hazardous substance.

Because hazardous substances pose a massive health and safety risk to anyone exposed, it’s necessary that anyone who may encounter the hazardous substances is properly trained on how to safely manage the hazard.

Any job where a worker may be potentially exposed to hazardous substances requires hazwoper certification. This certification covers personal protection, as well as hazard identification and prevention.

Hazwoper Training

In order to obtain your hazwoper certification, you will have to undergo hazwoper training. The training is straightforward, complies with OSHA’s hazwoper standards, and can be completed in a short amount of time. You can even get your certification online.

There are three levels of hazwoper training available. These include:

  • 40-hour
  • 24-hour
  • Hazwoper refresher (8 hours)

Both the 40-hour training course and the 24-hour training course will provide you with certification. These training courses also meet the requirements of OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3).

The 40-hour course can be completed in 5 days and is for workers who work more frequently with hazardous substances. Workers with 40-hour hazwoper training often have access to the higher paying jobs. The hazwoper certification 40 hour average salary is approximately $20,000 higher than jobs that only require the 24-hour hazwoper certification.

If you are a worker that is on site occasionally for a specific limited task, then the 24-hour course will get you the certification you need. The 24-hour course can be completed in 3 days and is for workers who are less likely to be exposed to hazardous substances.

Hazardous certification expiration happens after 12-months, which is why the refresher course exists. After 12 months, workers must complete the 8-hour hazwoper refresher course in order to maintain certification.
